Despite the name reminding of the famous financial crash a few years ago, the Lehmanns Brothers have nothing to do with financial dealings. The group was born in Angoulême in 2012, in a small garage on Avenue Lehmann where five students from the local music high school would meet, brothers in groove, united by the same passion for Afro-American rhythms.
Influenced by funk masters like James Brown and Prince, and hip-hop icons such as The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, and D’Angelo, the French group intends to revisit the legendary jazz-funk of the 70s, infusing it with echoes of hip-hop, house, and nu-soul, showing respect but not subservience to their models.
The Lehmanns Brothers have accepted the challenge and it’s no coincidence that they’ve cut their teeth opening for Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Electro Deluxe, and Wu-Tang Clan, before being selected among about 700 groups to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival, then at Blues-sur-Seine near Paris and the Jazzahead festival. And now the pupils are on the right track to surpass their masters.
