The first listen might suggest: this is a new funk production from the Minneapolis scene, born from the genius of Prince. But no: the Next Movement comes from the closer Switzerland and is redesigning the coordinates of a new funk with a fusion of various influences, from James Brown to Jimi Hendrix, from Miles Davis to Prince, obviously.
The singer and drummer J.J. Flueck, bassist Pascal “P” Kaeser, and guitarist Sam Siegenthaler have known each other for decades and have played together in various situations, often as sidemen, until the day they decided to pool their creative resources under the common banner of The Next Movement, a name borrowed from a famous song by the Roots.
Forming the band was the most logical consequence, and the musical direction taken is very clear: music for the body and mind, propelled by an unstoppable groove and flavored by ventures that veer towards pop. And in the end, it makes you think that Switzerland is no longer just the homeland of chocolate. To believe it, listen to the eponymous album, released by the German label Leopard, specializing in everything that today makes funk and fusion. And live, the machine of The Next Movement is even more overwhelming: it’s advisable to buckle up.
